Kaneki’s speech in this chapter really embodies the change that he has experienced since this series first began. In the beginning, Ken is nothing more than a passive character — lamenting and accepting his tragedy. It is the way of the world — because the world is “wrong.” However, Ken had come to view the world differently. Last chapter, he accepted that the world “just is,” — not good and not bad — but something that lie somewhere in between — somewhere in the grey.

Likewise, Ken also acknowledges that despite the sadness of the world — despite the fact that one’s time is limited on this Earth — one can still fight for the beauty and for the little moments that take place in between. We don’t have to calmly accept tragedy. We are not passive and helpless passengers in our own stories.

We still have choices to make to choose our fate. To choose how we live — and how we die. At the beginning of the story — ken could not make a choice as a symbol of his own perceived helplessness to the things that happened to him. And now — he takes ownership of his fate. His growth has really been beautiful to see.

Thank you for this story, Ishida Sui. It’s really been a pleasure to read and grow with these characters. Especially Kaneki.
